A danseuse par excellence, a renowned psychiatrist Dr. K.S Pavitra hails from Shimoga, the cultural city of Malnad. She is the second daughter of renowned Psychiatrist Dr. K.R. Sridhar and noted writer Vijaya Sridhar.
Being brought up in a cultural and intellectual environment Pavitra was keen on pursuing career in both science and arts. Hence Pavitra with her brilliant academic career set out to study medicine and completed her M.B.B.S in Mysore Medical College and specialized in Psychiatry by obtaining M.D. from National Institute of Mental Health And NeuroSciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore. Along with her academics Pavitra had the opportunity to study Bharatanatyam, Karnatic Vocal and Veena. Sanskrit and Kannada literature, Yoga and Kalaripayatt. Though Pavitra completed preliminary exams in all these areas with excellence, she chose Bharatanatyam as her passion. Pavitra’s artistry is the quintessence of the pristine purity of the much sought after Pandanallur school of Bharatanatyam. She was astutely trained with a hard apprenticeship under Karnataka Kala Tilaka Guru Dr. Vasundhar Doraswamy in Pandanallur school of dance form for more than 20 years.
Being a talented researcher and having a scientific mind Pavitra’s vision was beyond giving dance performances or learning only dance. Hence Pavitra set out to study the new horizons of dance and mental health.Pavitra’s thesis on ‘Creativity and Mental Health’ was approved by NIMHANS and she won the Marfartia award for he best researcher given by the Indian Psychiatric Society. Pavitra currently is researching in the areas of ‘Dance as a tool in promoting mental health’, ‘Therapeutic aspects of dance in mental health’ and ‘The link between mind, literature and fine arts’.
Dr. Pavitra with her vision of extending of dance to smaller cities has made Shimoga her base. She is the founder director of “Srivijaya Kalanikethana ” which is a registered charitable organization founded to spread and perfect the link between arts and mental health. Srivijaya Kalanikethana offers “Gurukul” system of learning with accommodation facility, library, stage for performances and a set of excellent tutors.
